Greetings in the name of the Lord:

My most recent endeavor has been that of making an instructional video, Technology for the Smaller Church, for the upcoming 2016 Retreat @ the Lakeview Methodist Conference Center, April 15-16.  This has certainly been an adventure for me, as I have had to learn two new software apps: Reflector 2 and BandicamReflector 2 is an app that will transfer the iPad screen to a laptop computer were it can then be captured on video using another app called Bandicam.

Anyway, it seems that word has gotten out that all churches, no matter the size, are now able to video record the Sunday message, so that they can then post it to their church webpage.  All that is needed in the pulpit is an iPad with an app called Teleprompt+, as well as, a minister who is willing to step outside his or her comfort zone.  Trust me, I speak from experience when I talk about “comfort zones;” we all have them.

On this video, I have also included extra information on the use of Keynote for iPad.  I have found this app to be very useful in the service, as well as, during Bible Studies.  With Keynote, I am able to have the Order of Service presentation right there in front of me, one slide at a time.  I can easily move backwards or jump ahead in the service so that I know exactly where we are at all times.  It’s so much easier than shuffling through the bulletin and trying to figure out what’s up next.  Also, I don’t have to turn my head to the side to view the sanctuary screen during hymns, but have the words right there in the pulpit.  With Keynote, I can also, easily add my own personal notes, reminders and prayers for that particular service.  How cool is that?

If you find this interesting, I invite you join a new UMC Group on Vimeo.  There you will be able to view current and future videos and enter into dialogue with other members.  I hope you will join the Vimeo Group and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Introduction video is currently posted there, but very soon the full Retreat Video will be added, along with nine short videos for your learning convenience.  The short videos will include:

  1. Introduction

  2. The Pulpit Set-Up

  3. iPad Apps

  4. PowerPoint to Keynote

  5. iPhone Remote

  6. Teleprompt+

  7. Exporting for Web

  8. Upload to YouTube

  9. Credits

I hope you have found this blog to be useful and will be able to use the information in your ministry.  May God use our endeavors in a powerful way, as we work together, to get the Good News of Jesus Christ beyond the walls of each and every local congregation in the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.  Blessings to you and on your ministry!

Grace & Peace,

Reverend Paula Behrens
